Cover Your Ears

In the news there has been a story that I have a strong personal opinion about. If you have not hear, NewSouth Books is going to re-print Mark Twain's classic novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with one crucial change, the N-word, that fills Twain's book, is going to be removed and replaced by slave. Now let's get one thing clear, I do not like the N-word, I find it offensive and do not like to say it. That being said The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a classic book, by changing this key word that exposing racism and the social setting of the time you are completely changing the book. The used of the N-word in Huck Finn is meant to shock readers and is used as a literary devise. If Mark Twain wanted the word slave to be used he would have wrote it like that originally.
America has become too soft and spoiled. Just because something like a word upsets so people they have to change it to please everyone. Well guess what? I AM NOT PLEASED! You can't just change the past. Replacing the N-word with slave does not change the fact that the N-word was used and is offensive or the meaning behind it. The word slave doesn't have the same meaning as the N-word and changes the meaning of the book.
If you don't feel comfortable reading a book with the N-word so many times don't read it! But don't be a sour puss and wreak a fine piece of literature for everyone else.

A Love For Words

I have always loved reading and writing. A few weeks ago I came cross a letter from my third grade teacher saying she had never had a student who loved to write as much as I did. Knowing this it makes the confession I am about to make not as shocking. And I do have a confession to make... Here it is: I love to read the dictionary. Yeah most people don't find a dictionary a literary  classic but let me explain. My mom recently got our family an new dictionary and it's AMAZING! It's so fun going through and finding all these new words you have never heard of. Reading the dictionary might be really nerdy but who cares! ;) Next time you're bored just pick one up and discover all the marvelous words stores inside.

Too Many Books?

Everyone has heard the say "Too much of a good thing." I might have a few too many books that I have to read. The Borders near my house is going out of business so everything is 20% off. This is such a great deal how could I pass it up? So of course I went there the other day and got three new books for TWELVE DOLLARS!! That's four dollars a book! How can you go wrong with that? The only problem is now I have MORE books that I need to read. Which isn't really a "problem" it's just a fact. There is nothing wrong with having a lot of books! Right? Now if there is ever a rainy day (or week ;)) I will be set with enough books to read. When books are a good deal it is just so hard to not buy them!

Alice in Wonderland

Tonight at my high school, six of my peers put on an amazing one act rendition of Alice in Wonderland. Plays and musicals are so entertaining to watch! I always love going to them. Now I know this blog is suppose to be about books but seeing the play has made me really want to go and read the original book by Lewis Carroll. The play included a lot of interesting concepts about time and life. Many ideas touched on during the play were new and intriguing to me. For example, the White Queen talks about how see needs a band-aid. Alice asks her why and the queen replies that her finger is bleeding. Upon expecting the queen's finger Alice sees no blood. She tells the queen and the queen replies that is not bleeding now but it will in the future. It brings up a new interpretation of time that I never thought of. To me, it seemed to be talking about living in the present and not have the things that MIGHT happen hold you back. Or at least that is what I got out of that little dialogue, I might be reading to much into it. But that is why I want to read the book! If I can get that much out of a few minutes of a play what can I get out of a whole book? Seeing the play made me interested in discovering what the original book is like. Moral of the post, Alice in Wonderland has been added to my "Books to Read" list. :)

Renewed Love

Due to school and life I haven't done that much reading since the summer. I have a BUNCH of books in my room that I want to read and I haven't made much head way on them. :/ But this past week I finished two of the books! Of course I had started both of them but it felt good to finally finish them. The two books I finished was Deadline by Chris Crutcher  and Push, which was made into the movie Precious. They were both REALLY good and I will probably post reviews of them later. :) It felt good to read again! I also started a new book called Dancing in the Moonlight. It's a romance and I have been trying to read different genres of books since I feel like I read to many romances but the book is pretty good so far so I am excited to finish it! There is no better feeling than finding a book and getting into it. :) I am hoping now, even with school I will continue to go through my pile of books when I am done with this books!

Prologue

Mrs. Tolle, the oh so wonderful creative writing adviser, talks about blogging and how the point of it is to write about a specific topic rather than a bunch of random thoughts.
I tried to think about what I could blog about. I love books and I love to read (even if I don't do it as much as I want). The PERFECT topic was clear! I should write about books, what would be better!? So Here it is, my tell all blog about books and everything book related! Enjoy. :)
